Nascar becomes eco-friendly

The plans at Pocono call for a system comprised of a whopping 40,000 photovoltaic panels to be installed on what used to be a parking lot across the street from the track. The raceway’s president, Brandon Igdalsky, ensures that “the solar farm is expected to generate 3 megawatts once it is completed in spring 2010” and “the project is expected to cost $15 million to $17 million but [will] more than pay for itself over time.

  1. Do the PV panels generate enough electricity for the entire raceway to rely solely on it?

  2. That's a huge step towards alternative energy use which is exactly what this planet needs. How many megawatts is needed to power the entire raceway and stands etc.?

  3. How fast will this pay itself off? And how much does maintenance cost for these PV panels annually?

  4. How much did these PV panels cost? Are you sure it can power a whole raceway?

  5. I think its a great ecofriendly idea to install solar panels at the raceway, will the energy be used just to run the raceway?

  6. I believe that the installation of these solar panels is a great idea because it is very sustainable. The track would be operating on renewable energy. Also, the area for these solar panels would not be disturbing/disrupting the environment because NASCAR is making use of an old parking lot. This plan appears to be very ecofriendly.

  7. Sounds like a great idea, but can they power the whole raceway? If not is it worth it?

  10. Will the smog from the cars on the raceway have any effect on how much the solar panels can absorb?
